Today marks the 100th year anniversary of the start of WWI. Thought to be a war that would be over by Christmas, WWI dragged on until 1918, claiming the lives of close to 37 million people, including civilians. The ‘Great War’ changed the face of conflict forever. No longer was war a glorious, glamorous means in which a boy could become a man, and a country could become an empire. War turned into what it was— a horrific end to life and peace.

 Never Forget.

THIS WAS THE FUNNIEST THING OF ALL THE SHOW

Do they ever take the mom to task for not teaching her Spanish though ? I mean her mom is there.

There was literally nothing funny about this though?

^^^^ that scene hits me right in the *assimilated* child of an immigrant feels. Cause so many parents don’t teach their kids their native tongues (for various reasons) and it hurts us. Especially when we try to connect with those parts of ourselves but other people delegitimize our identity because of a language barrier we are not responsible for.

And before a grade A piece of Shit decides to chime in with “teach yourself” :

1. learning a new language is incredibly hard especially without assistance.

2. Many of us don’t have easy access to quality language learning resources for our mother tongues.

3. In regards to colonized people, of the easily accessible resources,  most of them are the European versions of the language and not the language of the people. Which means you end up sounding like a stranger.

So yeah, nothing is funny about this at all.

Additional Points:

4. White people are rewarded for learning/speaking more than one language. People of color are ridiculed for that same thing, especially if it impacts any part of their English. A lot of migrant parents think they are protecting us when they don’t teach us our native languages; They think if we only learn English, if we don’t pick up their accent, we might have an easier time in this racist society. Unfortunately, they’re usually right.

5. Learning a new language, especially as an adult, is extremely difficult. Add to that learning disabilities, neuroatypicalities, poverty, lack of resources, lack of time, and it’s nearly impossible.

radmax:

Dear White People isn’t set for wide-release until October yet has received an incredibly polarized range of ratings on IMDb. I’m sure they all saw it at festivals and gave it a fair review based on the quality of the film.

U.S. Dismisses Lawsuit Against Chiquita For Hiring Paramilitary Groups To Kill Colombians
July 25th, 2014
A US appeals court has dismissed a lawsuit against banana grower Chiquita brought by at least 4,000 Colombians who accused the company of supporting paramilitary forces who killed or tortured their relatives.
In the 2-1 decision on Thursday, the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals found a 2013 US Supreme Court ruling limited foreign nationals’ ability to seek damages against corporations in US courts.
Chiquita, the world’s largest banana producer, pleaded guilty in 2007 to making over 100 payments beginning in 1997 to the United Self-Defense Forces of Colombia (AUC), a right-wing paramilitary group the United States considered a terror organization. Chiquita handed AUC $1.7 million in cash and checks before ending the practice in February 2004.
In 2001, Chiquita was identified in invoices and other documents as the recipient of a shipment from Nicaragua of 3,000 AK-47 assault rifles and 5 million rounds of ammunition. The shipment was actually intended for the AUC.
Banana giant Chiquita has spent around $780,000 in the past year and a half to block a 9/11 victims’ bill in the US Congress. The legislation aims to aid victims and families in their claims against supporters or sponsors of terror attacks.
The bill would attempt to impose civil liabilities on those found to have aided and abetted US-designated terrorist groups overseas.
Now-Attorney General Eric Holder represented the fruit company in the previous lawsuit.

Breaking news: wealthy US corporation does horrible thing, US government lets them get away with it. More at 6.
