Police officers in Ferguson, Missouri, have begun wearing body cameras after weeks of unrest over the shooting death of an unarmed black teen by a white officer and sharply differing accounts of the incident, officials said on Sunday.

Michael Brown, 18, was shot multiple times by Ferguson Police Officer Darren Wilson on Aug. 9, sparking nearly three weeks of angry protests in the St. Louis suburb and drawing global attention to race relations in the United States.

Law enforcement and witnesses gave differing accounts of what transpired before Brown was shot, with police saying the teen had struggled with the officer. Witnesses say Brown held up his hands and was surrendering when he was shot multiple times in the head and chest.

The discrepancy has revived calls for officers across the county to be outfitted with body cameras to help capture an accurate record of police-involved incidents.

Please take a minute to generally know what’s going on in Pakistan right now.

On August 14th, Pakistan’s Independence Day, peaceful demonstrators started a march for the capital in opposition to the current prime minister. Now 17 days in to their peaceful sit in at the prime minister’s house civilians are being attacked and brutalized by the military.

They are being shot with rubber bullets, tear gas, and shells. Women and children are on the frontline, joined by lower and middle class citizens. It’s not rebels or bad people, its teachers, craftsmen, doctors.

It is hardly being reported on international media, but a peaceful protest in a democratic country is being met with such hard violence sanctioned by its military, and that’s a very very scary thing.

Headlines are making it sound like it is an equal clash, but these are UNARMED CIVILIANS, who are exercising their human right to oppose injustice. They want the current president Nawaz Sharif to resign, and are being attacked for it. Tensions in Pakistan are the direct result of the upper class elite and misuse of power by the military declaring a state of emergency to bypass laws and impose curfew on its citizens, by any force necessary.

What’s going on: Protests, basically. It started off as a long march called the Azadi or Freedom march by PTI led by Imran Khan an opposition party in the parliament and the Inqalaab or Revolution march by PAT led by Tahir-ul-Qadri, a non entity in the parliament but someone who can pull crowds to himself. The march went from Lahore to Islamabad, the Pakistani capital, where they gave (and are still giving) a dharna, which I think is a sit in in English. These were all peaceful protests and the sit in was peaceful until yesterday, when the protesters started going toward the prime minister house after failed negotiations (and a lot more) and well, they weren’t allowed to go far because the police went in with tear gas, rubber bullets, and also in one instance, actual bullets. This has resulted in about upwards of 200 injuries and 7 people dead, 2 are critical, obviously again these are premature numbers and there’s likely to be a lot more.

Now, WHY: Simply, the march happened because of allegations of rigging in the general election of 2013 that led to Nawaz Sharif, head of the PML-N to come to power. The Lahore Incident, which is linked here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2014_Lahore_clash), read up. Generally, also non responsiveness to valid rigging allegations, and no sign of opening up areas where these allegations exist. A lot more.

This is a very, very basic thing. I skipped military intervention in talks, the sit in was on going for two weeks, a lot more basis for the march, the entry into the Red Zone, more events. You can google and keep up with this and ask me more questions if you’re still confused. This is also an on going situation.

If I messed up something tell me I’ll fix it. Add more to this if you want.

some good sources to keep up with pakistan:

http://tribune.com.pk/

if someone wants to add on more sources that would be great!!! I’ll add more as I find sources that seem unbiased

many of my close family friends are protesting in islamabad & lahore right now so any prayers would be greatly appreciated.

it also may be worth noting that the current prime minister of pakistan, nawaz sharif (the man currently being accused by the PTI and many pakistanis of rigging the pakistani elections), is a former pm of pakistan. he was exiled from the country for corruption decades ago and only recently was allowed back into the country following the ousting of his political rival. because sharif (and his entire family) are extremely rich and have a humongous financial and political presence in pakistan, it only took him a couple of years to rise back to his position of prime minister. that’s right, a former exile of the country is currently in power. and he is not hesitating to terrorize his people in the same way many of pakistan’s past leaders have.

“Just so everyone is aware, there is a bunch of misleading info being spread around re: ALS research - the “27%” figure is based on previous years’ annual funding; furthermore, the remainder goes to improving the quality of life of those suffering from ALS. Given that the annual funding is approximately 16M, that’s just over 4M spent on decreasing their suffering. It isn’t greed, it’s a lack of money.”Shut up already.

The ALS Association has a 4-star rating from Charity Watchdog.
And the next time you start to complain about a charity either a) working on multiple fronts (because that’s what ALSA does—both seeking a cure and helping people suffering now) or b) daring to have administration expenses—let’s see how long you can last, much less tackle a cause, without printer paper and an internet connection.

As someone who has watched a family member die from a neuro-degenerative disease; funding to develop better wheelchairs and bedsore creams is *just* as important as funding research to cure the disease itself…

A friend of mine posted an update from one of HER friends to FB earlier.  Her dad has ALS.  The ALS foundation came out to see if they could put in a ramp for his wheelchair, but they couldn’t afford it because of the kind of ramp he needed for the kind of house they had.
This week they called back and said hey, the thing is, we suddenly have a bunch of money, so we’re coming out to build that ramp.  And they did.  She posted pics.
So if you feel like complaining about the ice bucket challenge…reconsider.
